St Lucia

The St Lucia campus of the The University of Queensland is located in south west Brisbane. Only seven kilometres from the city’s heart on a magnificent 114 hectare site beside the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and abundant playing fields and is the focus of the suburb. St Lucia is on the banks of the Brisbane river and a trip to the city on a ferry is a pleasure.

The bus only takes nine minutes from the campus to the city but the ferry is the most enjoyable way to travel to and from the campus and the city.

Toowong

Toowong is a hilly inner suburb of Brisbane, 5 km west of the city centre. At the centre of Toowong is a commercial precinct , with the balance of the suburb being residential, parks and the cemetry.

There is a  shopping centre located in Toowong Village which houses the Brisbane City Library. Toowong Village is conveniently located 3km from the Brisbane CBD. The centre has a large undercover car park, a railway station and Brisbane City Council bus interchange right there. Toowong Village has the  department store David Jones, a Coles Supermarket, Kmart discount department store and over eighty specialty stores including gourmet fresh food, fashion and homewares.

The suburb has two historic hotels, the Regatta Hotel and Royal Exchange Hotel.

Toowong cemetery is Brisbane’s largest and has signposted walks with information on notable people who are buried there.

Toowong Memorial Park is located on Sylvan Rd. It has extensive views of the suburb and is filled with Australia’s well known gum trees. The park also includes sporting ovals and a basketball centre.

Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium are also located in Toowong.

Woolloongabba

Woolloongabba is an inner surburb of Brisbane about 4 km south of the Brisbane Central Business District CBD.

The suburb is home to the Brisbane Cricket Ground, known as “The Gabba”.  Woolloongabba has many residences with views along the river. It is a popular surburb to live in because of its proximity to the Brisbane city centre and Southbank Parklands.

The Norman Hotel is a well known local landmark. Park Rd railway station is in the suburb and Mater Hill and Woolloongabba Busway Stations provide access to public transport.

Woollooongabba is also home to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The hospital and the University of Queensland, UQ, are connected by fast bus which takes only six minutes. Take the 109 from the Princess Alexandra Hospital Busway Station, Platform 2, Boggo Rd, opposite O’Keefe St. Exit the bus at UQ Lakes stop A, College Rd.

Indooroopilly

Indooroopilly is a suburb of Brisbane located 7 km west of the Brisbane central business district and close to St Lucia home to UQ.  The landmark Walter Taylor Bridge across the Brisbane River was completed in 1936.

Of interest a lead & silver mine was established on an Indooroopilly property. It was active for ten years from 1919 when it became unprofitable. Today the University of Queensland, through the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, operates the site as an experimental mine and teaching facility for engineering students.

Indooroopilly boasts significant commercial, office and retail sectors and is home to Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. The suburb is popular with professionals and a large number of university students from the nearby University of Queensland campus in St Lucia. The suburb is home to iconic Queenslanders, the popular timber homes, which have been restored.

Indooroopilly is well connected by public transport. There is a bus interchange adjoining the shopping centre with services to the city, university and other western suburbs.

There is a café and restaurant precinct along Station Road between the shopping centre and railway station. The suburb is well serviced by two cinema complexes.

Taringa

Taringa, a suburb of Brisbane, is mainly residential and is popular with staff and students of both the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology. Taringa is located 5 km south west of Brisbane CBD.

The suburb name ‘Taringa’ is derived from the aboriginal words meaning place of stones.

There is a Citytrain station in Taringa which goes to Brisbane City. Buses are available to Brisbane City centre,  UQ St Lucia campus and other suburbs.
